Old School Tacos!

Old School Tacos

I didn’t do a Recipe of the Week last week so I am kind of having withdrawals about it because I love sharing easy, family friendly recipes! This week I thought I would share one of my favorite family recipes: Old School Tacos. You know what I am talking about… little bowls filled separately with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, avocado and any other topping you want? Family style, spread out on the table so everyone can make their own tacos? Ya, that is what I am talking about: Old School Tacos!!!

We love “Taco Night” at our house. It is up there with “Pizza Night” which by the way is every Friday. I have finally perfected my taco meat. I used to only buy the taco seasoning packets, but those are just not as healthy as regular spices and are loaded with sodium. Plus this way you can always add more spices depending on your taste buds!

Old School Tacos

Taco Meat Ingredients:

1 lb. ground turkey or beef (we eat ground turkey in our house)

1/4 cup chopped onion

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 tsp. dried cilantro

2 tsp. chili powder

2 tsp. cumin

salt/pepper to taste

Add tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil to large saute pan and heat over medium heat. Add chopped onion and saute for about 5 minutes or until onion begins to turn translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for about 2 minutes. Turn stove down to medium-low, otherwise you might burn the garlic. Add turkey meat and break up as it cooks. When turkey meat is almost done, add all of the spices and salt/pepper. After turkey is cooked all the way through, taste for seasoning. You can always add more of any of the above spices! Put turkey meat into bowl for serving.

The Goods:

Corn tortillas or the hard taco shells, whatever you like better. I use corn tortillas and either crisp them up in the oven at 400 degrees or I put in between wet paper towels and microwave to get them moist and yummy.

Chopped tomatoes

Shredded cheese (I like a combo of cheddar and monterey jack)

Shredded lettuce

1 avocado, diced

your favorite salsa

Add each of the above into small separate bowls. Put everything on table and construct your tacos, topping with your favorite salsa!

Enjoy your Old School Taco Night!

  4. I haven’t had tacos in a while and this looks so good…especially with the corn tortillas. I’ve never thought of using corn tortillas before! Looks like it’s taco night tonight! Thanks for the idea!

  5. I agree, it is so much better to use proper spices than those spice packets, and the spices you have chosen sound just delicious. We haven’t had taco night here for quite a while – thanks for reminding me about it!!
