The holiday season is always the most hectic time of year. I always try to slow down just a little bit, take a step back and enjoy the little holiday comforts. These holiday comforts are what keep me sane and focused during this crazy time of year.

Choosing the Perfect Tree

One of my fondest Christmas memories growing up was heading to the tree farm to pick out our Christmas Tree. My sister, brother and I always went straight to the popcorn and hot apple cider. We munched and sipped as we walked around with my parents, looking for the perfect tree. I notice the same excitement and joy with my own children and it warms my soul knowing that they too treasure this holiday comfort.

Admiring the Christmas Tree

One of my favorite evening activities is to sit on my couch with a glass of wine and admire the Christmas Tree. It is peaceful and relaxing. This year, each night I admire, my eyes drift to one ornament in particular. My ceramic picture of my beloved Vandy boy. We lost Vandy in May so this will be the first Christmas in ten years that he will not be with us. Although I miss him terribly, looking at this particular ornament brings a sense of peace and happiness. We had ten wonderful years with him.

Wrapping Christmas Gifts

Although I do love receiving gifts myself, I absolutely love giving gifts. Every year when the house is quiet at night, I pour myself a glass of wine, turn on some Christmas music, throw on my Santa hat and wrap gifts. Yes, I wear a Santa hat. I love it. It is so relaxing and one of my greatest joys during the holiday season. I also enjoy volunteering every year for a non-profit organization where I wrap gifts for those less fortunate. It brings me comfort wrapping a gift for a child that otherwise would not get anything for Christmas.

Holiday Dinners with Friends

My friends and I love getting together for fun holiday dinners at our houses. The kids get to run around like wild animals and play while the adults cook and try new recipes while sipping on delicious wines. We love sitting around watching the wonder in the kids eyes as they show off Christmas tree ornaments and gifts under the tree to their friends.

Christmas Cookie Marathon

One of my all time favorite things to do around the holidays is make cookies with my mom and my grandmother. Of course, we always make way too many and eat them for weeks, but they are delicious! I love nibbling on all of my family’s favorite Christmas cookies. Now that Sadie is old enough, she likes to help make cookies too. Last year we had four generations of women making cookies in my kitchen. Pretty comforting and special if you ask me!
